It's the end of an era. Arthur C. Clark, Isaac Asimov... and now Ray Bradbury.

R.I.P. Anne McCaffrey

R.I.P. Anne McCaffrey, Creator of Pern and The Ship Who Sang

Anne McCaffrey wasn't just the inventor of Pern, the world where a whole society is based on dragon-riding. She was also an incredibly influential author who helped transform the way science fiction and fantasy authors wrote about women, and the way all of us thought about bodies and selfhood. She was the first woman to win a Hugo Award and a Nebula Award, as well as a Grand Master of science fiction.

June 2008 edition

Since I have been having a problem getting the magazine shipped to me anywhere near the time they were supposed to mailed to me, I had actually called the publisher concerning this. Now, I get them mailed in an addressed envelope instead of the typical plastic sheath.

The cover sports Harrison Ford, and I have to say he looks pretty damned good for an ol' geezer. :D Lots of info about the new Indiana Jones movie, "The Crystal Skull" . I, like the writer of the article, am hoping that this isn't going to be cringe worthy , like the Mammoth Blemish (Phantom Menace) and the other two Starwars prequels.

Get ready for the Wachowski (The Matrix) brothers' SPEED RACER. From the still shots and the write up, seems to be another good one.

Have lots of reading. One of the things i like about SciFi magazine, they don't kiss ass. If something is meh, even if it's a SciFi channel production, you get told it's Meh.

I had subscribed to SciFi magazine. Now I know that living in Australia, I might get my issues a few weeks after the issues were released/mailed out to the US. That being said, when one issue was late, I thought it was just the international delay in shipping... until I saw there is another issue out. So, I called the US, and spoke to a very nice person named Dawn. At first she thought it might be because my subscription had expired, but quickly saw that I had subscribed for 2 years. :)

October magazine (issued in September) will be mailed out to me, and I was asked to give the Wil Smith issue a few more weeks, but if it didn't show up, email her directly and she will send me that one too.

I don't know why certain sites (SciFi.com and Showtime) block surfers outside of the US. It's galling that I was a member of their boards before I moved to Australia, and now I a get the "Sorry, American Visitors only!" or "Video not available for your location".

Anyway, blocking non-US surfers is a waste of their time, as a good proxy program/server bypasses their border patrol. Can't wait to see next weeks Dexter. "An Inconvenient Lie". :)

h.t. to [livejournal.com profile] fizzbang for this gem. This is so surreal, and odd, and I couldn't stop laughing.
