After the Melville council arborist checked the gum tree, it's been decided that it has to go. The whole thing. Damned shame, as that tree was a home, haven, nesting site, photography stage and food supply for hundreds of birds. The council will replant a native nectar bearing trees/shrubs, but it will take years for them to become established.

To keep the nectarivores fed though, I will be getting two larger capacity humming bird feeders and those will be put in the back yard to prevent squabbling and territorial fighting... well, cut back on it at least.

We still have the Jacaranda, the bottlebrush hedges, and a few other lower shrubs and trees.

Yesterday and the day before, we were hit by a severe storm front. Our gorgeous Gum Tree was badly damaged. This tree is (or should I say was) the stage for many of my large bird photographs (Cockatoos, Kookaburras, Galahs)

This makes me want to cry:

I am hoping that we will be able to have the outer sections removed, leaving the center spire to 're-bush' (gum trees are notorious for how difficult they are to 'kill off').

Squabbles: the tree above was a major, and I mean major, food source and nesting area for local honey eaters and other birds. Our bottlebrush trees, which were trimmed way back last year because of solar panel installation, were another. I 'fixed' the bottlebrush tree problem by getting 5 hummingbird feeders and finding a proper nectar recipe, supplementing it with 'molting vitamins' every once in a while, and spreading them out in the bottlebrushes. Now that the gum tree was badly damaged by the storm, the competition for that food source has resulted in squabbles, with the oldest, biggest Red Wattlebird being the bully of the block.

There is a good chance that I will have to spread them out a bit further, in different trees, and will be refilling them more often.

Have some stormy weather, with very strong gusty winds heading our way. Wind's already here. Have tucked things into the shed, other things up against the gate and house. Filled watering can to weigh it down. Made sure the lime tree was off the wheeled dolly (can't have that fall over again)

As I have this quirk of typically sleeping through, or getting drowsy during them. (yawn) and this incoming storm is having the usual affect.

It was two cats who were spooked by the weather and demanded a snuggle, meeping and meowing, head snogging, pawing, trying to hide under the blankets.

Normally, I just sleep through stormy weather. I guess the winds were more intense than usual, and it made them skittish.

OH well, I can always get a nap in later... (pauses for incredulous laughter here) Yeah, right.

There was a clap of thunder so close to the house, that it shook the globe from a light fixture right off the ceiling, sending it to smash on the stone floor. Took a while to get all the shattered crystal pieces off the floor.

Then there was Ziggy, whose exit was so fast, I think we felt the vacuum/pop of her exit as she dashed into the closet. Then she yowled in complaint.

Wing thought he was going have his birthday slide by without any notice. I disabused him of that by bringing one Tim Tam on a plate, and singing "Happy Birthday" to him.

Should hit in about 20 to 30 minutes. Hard winds, gusts up to 104kph.

hatches still battened down, all light objects secured.

Here's hoping we don't lose power, or if we do, after dinner is cooked.

No, I didn't enhance the color, everything appeared as if I was looking through orange tinted glasses.

The flash brightened up my lime tree, but the orange coloring is still very obvious.

More storms are expected again this afternoon. Lost power yesterday, and didn't get back until around 4am. Here's hoping no landslides, no one gets hurt.
anysia: (WTF??!!)
But with the thunder and lightning coupled with the deluge ... no doubt about this not being snow.

Loki is clinging very close, Lucy is yowling, Ziggy is hiding in a closet, and Simba is bounding all over the furniure. Keito, he is in his usual place sleeping. I swear, sometimes you have to shake Keito to make sure he's all there.
anysia: (WTF??!!)
Wasn't joking about how hard the winds were blowing!

A tree decided to try mitosis... sort of, and split in half.

One end

The other end.

And the storm isn't over yet.
