When I was a kid, I loved "delicious" apples. Red Delicious, Golden Delicious. But when I was an adult, because of long cold storage, and other reasons (farming, growing of certain varieties only) "Delicious Apples" just weren't. No fragrance, no flavor, with the taste and texture of wax.

Today, Wing and I were out pillaging. I went into the local growers veggie store.

I, to my delight, found some October Sun Plums, a favorite of mine. Meandered through, picking up some sugarsnap peas, a few avocados. I turned down the aisle, and smelled something I hadn't smelled in decades, but remembered.

The honeyed apple fragrance of Golden Delicious apples. Thinking I was mistaken, I looked around, and there I saw them. Golden in color, some with a slight blush of red. I picked one up, held is close to my face, and inhaled. Mana must smell like this.

Bought some, and brought them home.

Unpacked the groceries, and took one apple from the bag. Washed it off, and then took a bite.

You know how scientists say our sense of smell is the one sense that can bring memories flooding back like no other sense can? That one bite of a Golden Delicious apple brought back good memories of my Grandmother, baking pies, catching fireflies then letting them go before we went in for the night, and a slew of others. A feeling that all is well with the world.

Such a small thing, one Golden Delicious Apple. Pardon me while I put the other ones in the crisper.

I finally get to slow down and not having anything scheduled to do. But that doesn't mean I do nothing. Domestic chores wait for no one, and don't do themselves. Saw sunshine, and felt a warm wind, so stripped the bed to wash sheets and blankets and get them out on the line. No sooner was the washing machine finished, it was cloudy and drizzly. And of course as soon as everything is almost dry in the dryer, the sun comes back out. Such is life!

Making minestrone for dinner. With the smell of herbs, onions, and other ingredients, house smells like an good Italian restaurant. :D Luckily, I have Alan as my taste tester. After a few times of sipping broth, I need a 'fresh palette'

Been watching the 'nutrition' experts. Over the years they have seesawed on everything.

Examples:
Caffiene/coffee is bad for you. Then it was good for you. Then it was bad for you, now it's good for you. I expect that to change again.

Salt: good for you, bad for you, now not the High blood pressure villain it was claimed to be. Next flip flow in 3..2...

Wine: good for you, bad for you, good for you, now causes cancer. (Same arguments were used about Cyclamates, was replaced by Saccharine. Then Saccharine was said to cause cancer. Now we have NutraSweet/Asparatame)

Sugars/Carbs: good for you, bad for you, good for you, bad and now causes diabetes and obesity. Of course then neglect mentioning if you eat enough of them for three healthy adults.

My take on it: Enjoy life, and all things in moderation.

Feel tired and worn today. Not cooking tonight. Just don't feel like it.

Take out, early night, and hopefully no Loki getting me up at 5:30 tomorrow morning.

Cooked a wonderful dinner. One of the dishes was egg pasta with mushrooms and a cream sauce.

About 90mins after eating, I was folded over writhing in abdominal pain.

Alan mentioned that the last time something like the happened was with another dish that had milk or cream in it, and chances are I am lactose intolerant because of other health issues.

I think he's right.

As much as I love USAFood, they are often out of stock, and the shipping costs can be a bit off putting.

Luckily for me (and others) a new store opened up, local to me. Be prepared, because of import duties some of the items are very expensive. Ah, but it's not something I do every week, just once in a while. IF Store. International Food Store & Cafe. It's on Canning Highway, in East Fremantle. I managed to get a few things that might not be for everyone, but they sure as hell are for me! :D And they take requests.

Went to archery like usual. Had a helluva good set of ends. Decided to head to the 40 meter target. Bad move, seeing as I had been shooting at 30 meters. One should always go from furthest to closer targets, not the other way around. I didn't do too badly, but more misses than I care to have, but over all good.

Went to Foo Gwai, where upon Aikidomayland and I made a poke bun sacrifice to Akire-yta. There were some rather rude diners, nagging the wait staff and just being overall rude jerks. Such is life.

I have been working on another digital painting. I did a small version of it, and decided to make a larger version so it would have more details. But I'm not going to do it all in one long sitting, as I did that with a different artwork and it took two days for my poor dried out eyes to recover. Live and learn.

Yesterday, I had sliced lots and lots of strawberries, and sprinkled some sugar over them, and popped in the fridge to 'self syrup', as they were rather sour, not just tart. Came out perfect. Made some whipped cream with the vanilla bean paste, and thinly sliced some madeira cake. Yup, I served strawberry shortcake. I swear Aikidomayland had a private moment.

I decided to make the minestrone. *inhales deeply* Oh that smells so good. Alan, my 18yr old son aka Official Taste Tester has given it two thumbs up. My only problem when I make soup is it seems I can only make a large stock pot of soups/stews. At least I know minestrone freezes nicely.

Found out I am allergic to Panadiene. I thought the rash I had gotten at the hospital was because of the soaps and detergents on the sheets and for the shower.
