Microsoft's answer to fixing to small, almost negligible problems, with Windows 10 is like killing a mosquito with a sledgehammer.

After an update, that 'succeeded', I noticed task manager wouldn't run. Since I subscribe to "Assure", I hopped online, and told them this one itty bitty problem.

Well, the first tech tried to do an "in place upgrade" which had no good result. Got to 17%, the the computer rebooted, got the message "UNDOING CHANGES MADE TO YOUR COMPUTER". Ok, Task Manager still not working, but I tend to use Process Explorer.

Then I noticed my Bluetooth was no longer working. It had the day before, as my graphics tablet was is bluetooth, and I was editing photos with it.

I checked device manager: yup, Bluetooth device is there, but driver not loading? WTF? Ok, off to Asus, and get the proper signed Windows 10 driver for it. Nope, still nothing.

Again, I head on over to MS Support, and not only do they NOT take the sfc/scannow and DISM logs, they're advice is just to nuke it from orbit. Only way to be sure. Ahem, do a full HDD wipe and reinstall. I really miss the way Windows XP did backups. If you had a corrupted file, you could load up your back up and MANUALLY copy the non-corrupted version right on over.

So, now it's a matter of picking a date and time, email serials and license numbers, deactivate programs, and doing a full blown reinstall. Oh effing joy.

On an aside: The bluetooth and task manager work fine on Windows 7 drive.

After a session with a Microsoft Tech regarding not being able to see camera raw files from specific cameras (Olympus OMD EM1mkII and EM5mkII, and Canon 5DmkIV) I was told it was a Canon issue and to contact Canon for 'the fix'.

Three guesses what I got in response... and the first two guesses won't count.

It's a WINDOWS issue.

Meanwhile, some versions of Windows will let you view CR2 files natively (for example, in a folder view). In previous versions of Windows, you needed to download the Microsoft Camera Codec Pack, which provides support for viewing RAW image file format thumbnails and image information in Windows Explorer.
In Windows 10, the default app for opening RAW image files is Windows Photo Viewer. However in some cases, Windows 10 operating system cannot open the RAW files in "preview mode" for images taken using new EOS camera models.

How the cameras I mentioned aren't 'new'. They are a few years old now.

This was my reply:

Not being snarky here, but I had a feeling this was the answer I was going to get. Microsoft said it was a Canon issue, and Canon saying it was a Microsoft issue. How about you two get together and fixing the problem, rather than fixing the blame.

I don't use DPP, although I do have it installed because I wanted to see if that would install a camera codec in Windows 10 and it didn't. I use On1Photo Raw, which sees the CR2 files just fine. Also, Photoshop CC bridge with latest camera raw update sees the CR2 images just fine. The problem is OTHER software (Aurora HDR, Luminar, Affinity) rely on Windows 10 native Windows Explorer in program to select and process images.

I will pass this along to Microsoft, and I am going to wager they will once again tell me it's NOT a Windows 10 issue, but a Canon issue.

So does my son.  I'm currently using older versions of Firefox/Cyberfox because the newest releases not only disable all my tried and true plugins/addons without any replacements for them, the new formats are freaking UGLY! My son is getting the "We will be disabling this version of Skype, so update now!" Problem is the version he's using now works better than the "new and improved" version.

I get fed up with all the excuses/reasons "To ensure your security" or safety. Bollix! It's up to ME to take care of that, not Microsoft, not Mozilla. That is what 3rd party security software is for.

So, until Microsoft releases a better version of Skype, one that doesn't have that gawd awful Facebook Messenger layout, or gives one with a customizable layout, and until there are updates, or REAL replacements for current browser extensions, I will stick with the 'old and lousy' over the 'new and improved.

It seems my Windows 8.1 w/WMC issues have been punted up to 'escalated'. But what got me is right off the bat, their email to me; My name isn't Stephanie. From there on their email was obsequious and condescending all at the same time. I let em have it with both barrels. Politely, of course.

First, their email to me:

Hello Stephanie,

My response:

Please stop lying, NO one has tried to call me. You have both of my phone numbers, and have had them for years, as I subscribe to ASSURE. A simple look up on my name and email address on your end would show you all my information.

I do still need help. But every time I have tried, your support keeps doing the exact same thing, regardless.

Let me tell you ONE MORE TIME:

Windows 10 Assessment tools said my Windows 8.1 Pro with Windows Media Center Sony Vaio laptop was Windows 10 Compatible/Ready.

I upgraded. To say it was a disaster would be an understatment.

Turns out that my graphics card was NOT supported by Windows 10 (your assessment tool was WRONG) and it kept unloading the graphics driver, BSODing, and this was in the first DAY. The Windows 10 update almost bricked my laptop.t would get to the login screen, and it kept refreshing over and over and over and over. After almost 3 hours, if it doing this, I was finally able to login and perform the roll back to Windows 8.1 Pro with Windows Media Center.

The roll back was only partially successful, and I have been plagued by slow start up, even with everything NOT MS prevented from starting at login. Windows Media Player and Windows Media center kept having errors. I logged into MS Help, got tech support, and was told to go to ADD FEATURES remove Windows Media Center and Player, and re-add them. So I followed those instructions, but when i went to Add Features, Windows Media Center kept failing to installed, and it's no longer listed in the APPS store.

I have gone through this 4 or 5 times, 2 to 6 hours at a time, with your support staff, and what it boils down to is I need an installation disc/ISO/FILE of Windows 8.1 Pre 64bit with Windows Media Center. I know you no longer sell it, but I'm NOT asking to buy it, as I already have. I can't be the only WIndows 8.1 Pro w/WMC who has had this problem.

Now, I know your EULA/TOS says Microsoft can't be held resposible for any damage caused, even when it is caused by your own flipping software, but I have had a Sony Vaio PAPERWEIGHT because YOUR Windows 10 Assessment tool was wrong, and the Windows 10 installation has made a mess of my Sony Vaio. The computer is basically unusable. It is my portable photo editing studio, my portable work computer, and NOT having it has cost me time and money and jobs I have had to turn down.

I got a phone call without giving them my phone number again, proving the lie they had been trying to get ahold of me by calling. I nicely corrected them as to my name. They said someone would call me between 12 and 1 today, so imagine my surprise when they called me at 10:30am.

He said he will call back at the originally agreed upon time. (When I say my Windows 8.1 laptop is slow to totally boot into Win Desktop, including the desktop icons.. 14 freaking minutes, and no, there is nothing wrong with hardware.)

But will wait until Friday.

After 6 hours with Microsoft support working on my laptop with little or no success, my problematic computer has been punted up to Tech Tier 2. More things will be tried, but I have sinking feeling that Alan is right, that it would take less time for me to just reinstall windows, and then the rest of the programs.

After hours online with MS Support, three different techs regarding doing a "repair install" on my Window 8.1 laptop that the 'free' upgrade to Windows 10 screwed up, and I managed to roll it back to 8.1, but had persistent problems, hardlocks, things not working, I got told TODAY that I can't do a repair install, I have to do a full reinstall, which means reinstalling all the programs currently on it.

I know that Microsoft TOS/EULA says they can't be held liable for damages caused even when caused by their own products, but the MS Windows 10 assessment tool erroneously said my laptop was Windows 10 ready. That turned out to be wrong. But had the Win 10 update had said "If you install this and it doesn't work, you have to wipe your drive and reinstall everything again", instead of "All you have to do is roll back to previous OS", I never would have updated it.

Error 0x80073712.. whatever the hell THAT means.

I finally got a straight answer from MicroSoft in regards to getting my poor Vaio back to abby-normal Windows 8.1 after the disaster that was Win10 update. All I needed was a new Windows 8 license key, because the Windows 10 disaster invalidated my current one, even with the roll back. After almost frying my computer, JM had the audacity to tell me that a new License key would be $40... Excuse me?

So, I gave them my ASSURE info, then let my son Alan tell them the problem. So, Alan took over the keyboard and told them that the Win10 almost bricked my computer, took 3 hours to login to be able to roll it back, but I am still having persistent problems, and need a new OEM key to do a Repair Install (aka fixes specific issues without doing a factory reset) and that it was update to Win8 on the Vail was a digital download.

Ta Da! New OEM key provided, and dling Windows 8.1 Pro with Windows Media Center! (not so much I need Media Center itself, but I need specific DLLs that allows other programs to work.
