First it was the iPod. Nifty mp3 player. Then other mp3 players came out, but iTunes sells music that was only playable on iPods due to the mp4 format (unless you were bright and umm resourceful and found a way to convince the legally purchased music to become compatible with your other-than-iPod player)

Now, there is the iPhone. Multimedia device, but locked to AT&T network? Au contraire! A bright teenager in New Jersey figured out how to unlock it from AT&T. True, it's only working with T-Mobile, but hey, it's a start.

Now I have read all the hoopla about the iPhone, and as much as it's a nifty gadget, I am gonna give it a miss. Not just because I live in Australia now, and they are only available in the US. With the first step in unlocking it from a network, I am sure there will be a booming market for them once the method becomes simpler. It's because I have a new, yet slightly 'outdated' Palm Treo650. Since it has an SD card slot, I didn't see the purpose of shelling out $300 more for the 680 which had 32 megs of more onboard memory. 4 gig cards make 32 megs onboard memory a bit over priced. I have had a windoze based Smartphone. It's sitting on a desk right now, unused. I liked it, but it had crappy battery life. Now, my Treo is a great phone. It also plays avi, mov, mp3s (see above about convincing mp4s to become compatible) plays games, takes pictures and movies too. Only needs a battery recharge once every 5 days or so. It's a PDA too! Bonus!

It's also not as delicate as the iPhone. I have had friends of mine tell me how these things are too easy to break. That's a helluva way for Apple to make profits, on breakage or repairs.

I think I will stay with my Treo650. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
