Airline got back to us about what we can bring or what, if anything, is banned. It seems they aren't going to bow to the knee jerk reaction of banning everything, and have not changed their rules. Common sense inspection, and limited weight on carry-on.

It's all well and good to say "You don't like the new rules, don't fly" but that is rather unrealistic, and an extreme 'black and white' view. That mindset is well and good if you live in an area where even going to another country only means getting on a train or bus. I have yet to learn to walk underwater, or develop the endurance to swim to other countries.

I wish they'd do that here. Our security alert has gone down fron Critical to severe, and people are allowed more cabin items now (I suspect they don't think books and magazines ar dangerous anymore...), but flights leaving from London airports (so that will be most of them then) still have the same restrictions put in place. Even from non Lonodn airports you're not allowed fluids.

The airlines and airports are really pissed off with it now, but they're being told what to do by the givernment, who unfortunately are taking advice from Amerian intelligence so everything a bit 'harsh' at the moment.

The Bush Admin Security isn't Intelligence. And that Admin wants to hammer the message "Voting Democratic is Voting for Terrorists" (that is a Cheney quote BTW), and since Repubilcans have lost elections recently, they pushed Brits to bust the bad guys too damned early and are now saying "See? We were right!"

Unfortunately, those morons are in control for the next three years.

Our terror threat levels are decided by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre based on Intelligence gathered by both our own security services (MI5, MI6 and so on) and liasing overseas with their equivlents in other countries.

My brother said that apparently the attack was due this week. It probably was a little early though. They do apparently foil a number of planned attacks but this one was so big they reported it.

Brother mistaken... a 'dry run' was in the making this week. And none of the plotters even had plane tickets yet.

That's interesting. Matt doesn't currently doesn't work in any department that deals with counter terrorism as such (well obviously he works in defense and as that's part of our troops job it is to a degree....but it has nothing to do with at home operations really and isn't involved with intelligence).

Certainly in the UK, even in normal police investigations it tends to be the case that we wait for the latest possible time so that as much surveillence evidence can be collected as possible. If they haven't even bought plane tickets yet, then it makes me wonder how strong their case is at the moment. That said I know they've closed a couple of internet cafes in the town I live in, and have taken all the hard drives from the computers as they were apparently some of the cafes that they were using to plan the attack.
