A cat, when a choice is given, will hurk up a hair ball (along with the other stomach contents) on freshly vacuumed carpeting, rather than the huge expanse of stone floor.

hey, but said hairball, if left to dry out, is easier to hoover up than to clean the mess whilst it's still wet.
