But if you want intelligent, hard hitting, gritty in your face truths, then read this book. It will strip the glamour off the Rock Music/Journalism in a big way, and show you just how hard chasing your dream can be
Nerd Girl Rocks Paradise City, by Anne Thomas Soffee

Read this book.
just don't be drinking anything when you do.
When I started reading this, the first thought I had was "Well Mr. Peabody, we have set the wayback machine to my time.". From the prologue I was hooked (do yourself a favor, don't skip it, read it) especially the part about the older sister chant of "I....am.....telling!"
The names just brought back faces in my mind that I hadn't thought about in mumblemumble years. Clear, no holds barred 'telling it like it is' without apology, or excuses. It was a time when both sex and drugs were 'safe', and rock ruled. And sometimes doing the 'wrong' thing was the right way to go. Yes, it was the best of times, and it could be a hell pit of times, and never will it come to that full glory of Glam Stars, Moshpits, and Heavy Metal, Big hair bands again. It was a trip through memory lane for me,and for younger readers, it will give some great insight to what it was like in the 'good (bad) ol' days'.
I am glad I am an impatient old wench, who got fed up with the blankeyed stares when I asked about Nerd Girl at the bookstores, and just ordered from Amazon.
(No asskissing here, but I also love Iggy Pop. (darts look around) I got dubbed copy of Rock N Rule just because Iggy Pop does some tracks in it. >:) )

Thanx for the review! Your rings go great with the cover.
It was a good read
Date: 2006-01-27 12:03 am (UTC)It really brouht back memories, though, some good, some not so good. A few times a comment of yours would catch me off guard, and I would choke back coffee, or almost blow it out my nose. (Hence my 'just don't be drinking anything when you do."
You had the guts and the moxy to at least try, and I liked that. No "I wish I had" or "What if I." And just think.. you can embarass your son when he is alllll growed up, you tell the grandkids about their illustrious Nanna. >:)
