I think certain people get some sort of puffed up feeling of self importance when they whine and whinge about dance.

Ballet dancers don't think belly dancing is real dancing. Ballroom dancers don't think breakdancing is real dancing. Egyptian/Turkish belly dancers don't think tribal belly dance is real 'bellydancing'.

Oh fergossakes, get OVER it and just dance. Someone has posted in her 'newsletter' (still can't see where she thinks she is the delphic oracle of tribal dance, but hey we all have our illusions, far be it from me to shatter hers) about how 'cabaret dancers denigrate tribal dancers.'  Now you just know this will cause a knee jerk reaction from someone in the the cabaret bellydance area to say something back.  This is even more silly when you think she publishes articles in a magazine owned and edited by (drum roll please) cabaret bellydance studio owners/teachers!

Too much drama to dance!

There are individuals in both camps of belly dance who bad mouth the 'other side' but there are plenty of individuals who don't and plenty of individuals who do both! I personally think that all forms of belly dance are as real as each other. None of them are authentic to traditional dancing in the Middle East really. While there are definite differences between the various styles of dance they have all been moderated by contact with the west.

I did some ballet when I was very young, mostly to move a bit more gracefully. Then I did medieval dancing for several years, with egyptian style bellydancing. When I came here, I studied and learned even more, and now also do tribal.

They are all 'real' dance forms. But my point is the bigmouth with her newsletter is deliberately picking a fight. My personal bet is that during the recent Middle Eastern Dance Festival, things didn't go as well as she had hopped. Instead of just getting over it and moving on, she says something tht she knows will spark contention. Personally, I think she prefers having the 'two camps' crap. Makes her feel important.
