Seriously thinking about getting a monopod. Tripod is good for set up shots, shots that aren't time sensitive, or long exposure, but it's rather clumsy for scenic shots where you just need a bit of steadiness.

there is an alternative to a monopod that is more transportable - a long piece of string.
what? I hear you say, how does a floppy thing increase stability?
stand on one end, or better yet, put a loop in the end and put your foot in the loop, and attach the other end to your camera (strap, body, something) and hold the string taught. I've found it works quite well.

even better, is a longer length, of webbing - tie down strap works well, and put both feet through it, creating a triangle, with the camera at the apex.
sooooo much more transportable than a stretchy stick, if a bit more complex to conceptualise.

I use one for theatre work, and it's invaluable, especially with a heavy camera. Although I found myself using my tripod most of last night.
