Church ordered to pay $10.9 million for funeral protest
BALTIMORE, Maryland (AP) -- A grieving father won a nearly $11 million verdict Wednesday against a fundamentalist Kansas church that pickets military funerals in the belief that the war in Iraq is a punishment for the nation's tolerance of homosexuality.
The church and three of its leaders -- the Rev. Fred Phelps and his two daughters, Shirley Phelps-Roper and Rebecca Phelps-Davis, 46 -- were found liable for invasion of privacy and intent to inflict emotional distress.
It's about effing time. Hit these hateful sumbidges where it hurts.. in their wallets. I hope they appeal it, get tapped for more, and have to pay court costs. Phelps, and his ilk, are to Christianity what Bush is to peacetime in Iraq.

Date: 2007-11-01 03:30 pm (UTC)Then the local GLTBF group started doing pledges. Donate $X for every minute Phred and his family stand and protest. Donations went to AIDS charities, etc.... at first they were puzzled that the queer folks of Lawrence were walking up and thanking them and ignoring the taunts. I wish I'd been there when he found out why.
They very rarely come round here anymore.
Nor to the military funerals here, due a lot to the efforts of the Patriot Guard.
It's a shame he still manages to find places to make publicity for himself.

There's a great expose' on him here.
A real eye-opener, especially about his kids.

Date: 2007-11-01 01:41 pm (UTC)This is a seriously delusional man. Wow. His bio reads like a primer on "How to make as many people hate you as possible in the shortest amount of time." He makes me want to be religious so that I can rest easy that there is a truly special place- a theme park even- for him after he finally croaks. What a monumental asshole!
