It's bad enough that two consenting adults are being barred from having a legally recognised union. It's bad enough they can be subtly or not so subtly discriminated against, but this? Now you want to ban gay men from donating blood???

Edit: I might have to lock this posting because of several anonymous gay bashing nastygrams, and spinning of stats to fulfill wishful thinking. Gotta love it when people cruise to push their own agendas and phobias.

I'm fairly sure that bloodbanks don't let you donate if you've had male on male sex recently. So, yes, they test. But they also screen out 'risk' factors.

The hypocricy of this is that you can get HIV tainted blood from male on female sex too.

Well, girl on guy sex where the guy is bi is also excluded.

You are missing the point.

There is no delay or ban for heteros. But due to homophobia, there is one on gay males. Heteros don't have to be celibate for a specific time. Gays do.

I reject your assertion that it's due to homophobia, and more likely due to the much larger number of cases where AIDS transmission was due to male on male sex rather than heterosexual intercouse.

I reject your blindness. Hetero HIV tranmission is outstripping Gay transmission.

actually, to my knowledge, in the western world you're more likely to catch it through dirty needles or unprotected hetro sex...

Exactly. And again, all donated blood is tested for Hepatitis, HIV and other infectious diseases, so banning men who are gay is once again a discrimination, not the imaginary 'safety measure' its being touted as.

according to http://www.unaids.org/epi/2005/doc/EPIupdate2005_pdf_en/epi-update2005_en.pdf 44% of infected with Hiv/AIDS in the Oceania area are female. World wide 50% of the infected are female and/or a child.

If you were to ban everyone who was a 'risk', not only would you ban men who have had homosexual sex, you'd have to ban women who'd slept with men with who have had homosexual sex, people who have ever injected drugs (because they might have shared the needle), people who have slept with the drug injectors, men who slept with the women who slept with the men who slept with a man, anyone who's slept or taken drugs with anyone with anyone from Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and South America (because they're high risk areas), any person who'd been raped, women with husbands who refuse to wear condoms at all, women from socially disadvantage groups (as their transmissions are on record to be higher, regardless of country)... the only people who'd be deemed 'safe' would be rich white American virgin clean Jehovah Witnesses!!
