I am getting so fed up with the air time, and webspace that Michelle Leslie is getting. Cold busted with drugs in her handbag outside a club. She avoided the same prison sentence Shapelle Corby got (whose luggage was checked in and cleared at Aussie airport, shoved in the cargo hold, and she didn't see it again until she landed in Bali) because she was in the company of a an Indonesian Ministers' (no, not religious minister,POLITCAL) son, and her boyfriend is wealthy.
Shall we define the difference as to why the disparate sentences?
Shapelle: working class gal, taking a trip to Bali after saving 6 yrs for a vacation.
Michelle: International model, travels to whereever, but well known and publicised, in the company of Ministers' son and other 'influential' friends.
Shapelle: Checked her luggage (including the bodyboard bag) at Aussie airport, inspected and cleared, then stuffed in luggage hold. No contact made with it until Balinese authorities 'find' 4kgs of weed in it.
Michelle: Comes out of a club, bag searched, drugs found in it.
Shapelle: has maintained her innocense throughout, made no pretenses. Sentenced to 20yrs, reduced to 15.
Michelle: Became strict Muslim while being tried (paying lip service and it worked) to garner approval and leniency, and admitted drugs where hers. ( she did try to explain it as addiction, they were someone elses etc etc at first). Gets 3 months, time served. Ditched it once she realised she was gonna walk.
Yeah well and truly fair treatment under the law my ass. In just about any other country, Corby would have been found not guilty.

PS Do you figure Shapelle Corby went down maybe because she couldn't stump up a bribe, or otherwise was unable to pay for a demand for money from corrupt airport employees? I've actually heard of bribes being asked (for expediting equipment through customs, in this case) in Dublin. (I don't know why that surprises me, it just does. I've led a sheltered life.)

Date: 2005-11-26 09:12 am (UTC)Do I believe money changed hands in Michelle Leslies' case? Oh hell yes. Parents mortaged their house, and used half their savings, and her boyfriend probably lent a helping wallet too.
