Tribal Gear-ing
Jul. 13th, 2003 10:32 amYesterday, and part of today, I have spent working on a Kuchi inlay collar choker, and on making yet another tribal belt.
I got some thick felt and some calico (Thanks Meegan!!!) and made a comfortable backing for the choker. It was fiddly work, and I was surprised at how tired my hands got stitching the calico wrapped felt to the back of the necklace. I guess it was how small it was, and the weight of it. I finished it off with black cotton tape, about 2cms wide.
The new tribal belt is Cowry shell belt. I can't take credit for the beading, but when this was spotted, the potential for a belt was evident. Also lucked out on where it was found, in a bargain bin "Everything $10".
All that needs to be done on it now, is to make some ties for it, as the cords that are currently attached to it aren't strong enough to hold. I will probably get a nice heavy gabardine, or maybe even kimono obi fabric, which will be colorful and strong.
