As a student, I thought that I would need more coordination than you actually do! I am notorious for having two left feet and the body of a dancer in a tree. But it was great fun and all that practice and months of lessons paid off (thanks to our Meegan and Anysia :o) )
And about being poor, you don't actually need that much money to do it. Just as long as you have a long circle(ish) type skirt, a hip shawl (the thing with the fringe on it) you can make a tassel belt (doesn't need that much - just some material to attach some tassels to and some cord to tie it around your hips), you are all set. I ended up collecting stuff along the way, and I can make most of the stuff. The choli (top) doesn't cost all that much if you can't make one.
Besides, Meegan & Anysia are pretty flexible and may be able to lend you stuff if you need to borrow it. Come and try! It's so much fun and great for the body as well.
We had actually made the decision last year, when we first started out, that if a dancer truly could not afford costuming, we would lend stuff out until they could. We also take things out in barter and trade.
There was no way Meegan and I were going to go out front, dazzle the audience, with our students swaying in the background. What would be thr point in that? Being comfortable in the group, (and having that costume on makes you anonymous in the bunch) means more to us than being stars of the show.
Not my kind of thing ,plus we're still kind of poor .
We couldn't afford the lessons , I have no doubt that Ken could make costumes and that he would want to see me gut but that doesn't mean its going to happpen .
