Sep. 14th, 2003 01:22 pmI accompanied my husband to the dojo today, not to watch him train, but to not let him forget a promise he made to teen son. I was expecting his usual sensei, Freddy, and I had my usual handheld PC with an ebook and music ready to keep me entertained.
As I got comfortable, out of the way, in walks this man. His presence was amazing. A 7th Level Shodan visiting from Japan. He bowed respectfully, spotted me there in my corner, and I gave a respectful nod to him. There are some people in the world that one gives honor and respect to without question. He was one. It seemed rude to me to have my 'toys' to keep me busy, so I took off the headphones, turned off the handheld, put it in my bag, and sat at attention, and learned. He not only instructed the aikido students, but he would also look to me as he was explaining. I felt honored. If he saw a quizzical look on my face, he would explain in more depth, not just for the crew on the tatami, but to me.
At the end of the session, I got to my feet and did something I don't normally do. I stood up, and when I had eye contact, I bowed to him. He earned and deserved that honor. And that is what he got.
